Rohingya Empowerment Community (REC): Organizational Overview

Rohingya Empowerment Community (REC) is a Buffalo-based, Rohingya community-led organization dedicated to empowering Rohingya refugees through continuous, culturally and linguistically responsive support beyond initial resettlement. REC provides a permanent, trusted space where community members can access essential services, preserve their cultural and religious identity, and build stable, dignified lives. Through partnerships with local agencies, REC offers daily case management, employment support, healthcare navigation, citizenship and ESL classes, academic and career development, youth empowerment, and community-building activities. REC’s work addresses systemic barriers faced by Rohingya refugees while promoting long-term integration, civic engagement, and community well-being.

What You Will Do

  • Engage with resettlement agencies that REC partners with such as Jewish Family Services WNY, Journey’s End Refugee Services, Hope Refugee Drop-In Center, and International Institute of Buffalo to send referrals for immigration paperwork, employment, and other community resources.
  • Support with completing paperwork mostly Social Services, HEAP – Home Energy Assistance Program, healthcare, and school related.
  • Support with employment such as writing resumes and finding jobs and submitting application.
  • Find support resources from the Erie County (.gov) website
  • Assist with outreach in trusted community spaces such as churches, mosques, and community gatherings.
  • Help develop culturally and linguistically appropriate programs with the REC’s staff.
  • Support finding grands opportunities for REC’s programs.
  • Support summer kids and youth education workshops and community events.

Volunteers at REC can engage in a wide range of activities that reflect their unique interests and skills while contributing to the empowerment and well-being of the Rohingya community.
