Citizenship Classes

Rohingya Empowerment Community offers citizenship classes to help eligible community members prepare for the U.S. naturalization process. For many Rohingya refugees, passing the citizenship test is especially challenging because it requires the ability to read, write, and speak English. Many members of our community had little or no access to formal education due to decades of persecution and educational exclusion in Myanmar and continued marginalization in refugee camps. Recognizing these barriers, REC has developed a curriculum specifically designed to meet the unique learning needs of Rohingya students.

Our citizenship classes provide step-by-step guidance on English language skills,

U.S. civics, and the naturalization interview process. Because many participants are learning to read and write for the first time, the process often requires patience, consistent support, and long-term commitment. It typically takes over a year for most students to successfully reach their goal of citizenship. For a people who have lived their entire lives without nationality, becoming a U.S. citizen represents an incredibly meaningful milestone—offering a sense of belonging, security, and the opportunity to fully participate in civic life.
